1863 (December 18th)
A son, Franz was born to Archduke Karl Ludwig and his wife, Princess Annunciata of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, at Graz, Austria.
1875 (November 20th)
Franz Ferdinand’s cousin, Duke Francis V of Modena, died. Franz was named beneficiary and inherited a vast fortune.

Franz spent time serving in the army
1885 (during)
Franz was promoted to the rank of Captain in the army.
1888 (during)
Franz was promoted to the rank of Major in the army.
1889 (January 30th)
Franz became second in line to the throne of Austria after the heir, Crown Prince Rudolf, committed suicide.
1890 (during)
Franz was promoted to the rank of Colonel.
1893 (durig)
Franz was promoted to the rank of Major.
1894 (date unknown)
Franz decided that he wanted to marry Sophie Choteck von Chotkova but permission was refused because she was a lady in waiting.
1896 (19th May)
Franz became heir to the Austrian-Hungarian Empire following the death of his father.
1900 (1st July)
Franz married Sophie Choteck von Chotkova after Emperor Franz Joseph eventually gave permission for the marriage to go ahead.
1901 (24th July)
A daughter, Sophie, was born to Franz Ferdinand and Sophie Choteck.
1902 (29th September)
A son, Maximillian was born to Franz Ferdinand and Sophie Choteck
1904 (17th May)
A son, Ernst was born to Franz Ferdinand and Sophie Choteck
1913 (date unknown)
Franz was appointed Inspector General of the Austro-Hungarian army.
1914 (Summer)
Franz and Sophie were invited to Sarajevo to inspect troops stationed there.
1914 28th June (9.30am)
Franz Ferdinand and Sophie arrived at Sarajevo Station where they were met by the Governor General with cars for the journey to the Town Hall.
1914 28th June (10.10am)
Assassin Cabrinovic threw a grenade at the Archduke’s car. It missed the Archduke’s car but exploded under the following car injuring about 20 people
1914 28th June (10.20am)
Franz Ferdinand and Sophie arrived at the Town Hall. The archduke was furious at the assassination attempt, cancelled the tour and demanded to be taken to the hospital to visit the wounded.
1914 28th June (10.50am)
Travelling towards the hospital, the motorcade took a wrong turning. Assassin Gavrilo Princip was coming out of a shop. He stepped up to the car and shot Franz Ferdinand in the neck and Sophie in the stomach. The bullet that hit Sophie was meant for Governor Potiorek.
1914 28th June (11.30am)
The car carrying Franz and Sophie sped to the Governor’s house but it was too late the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were pronounced dead on arrival.
