This timeline lists the England Football Team Managers from 1946 to present day.

It includes details of the clubs they played for, clubs they managed, successes and failures as a manager and reason for being replaced.

 

1946 – 1962
Walter Winterbottom
Played for Manchester United before becomming first England Manager. He resigned to become first Director of the Sports Council.
1963 – 1974
Alf Ramsey
Played for Southampton, Tottenham and England. Managed Ipswich Town before becoming England Manager. He took England to victory in the World Cup of 1966 but was sacked in 1974 when England failed to qualify for the World Cup.
1974
Joe Mercer
Played for Everton, Arsenal and England. Managed Sheffield United, Aston Villa, Manchester City and Coventry City before being appointed caretaker manager of England following the sacking of Alf Ramsey.
1974 – 1977
Don Revie
Played for Leicester City, Hull City, Manchester City, Sunderland and Leeds United and England. Managed Leeds United before becomming England manager. He resigned in 1977 to manage the United Arab Emirates.
1977 – 1982
Ron Greenwood
Played for Bradford Park Avenue, Brentford, Chelsea, Fulham and England B team. Managed West Ham United before becoming England Manager. He resigned in 1982 after only reaching the second round in the World Cup.
1982 – 1990
Bobby Robson
Played for Fulham, West Bromwich Albionm, Vancouver Royals and England. Managed Fulham and Ipswich Town before becomming England Manager. Although Robson took England to the semi finals of the 1988 World Cup his contract was not renewed and he accepted a position to manage PSV Eindhoven.
1990 – 1993
Graham Taylor
Played for Grimsby Town and Lincoln City. He managed Lincoln City, Watford and Aston Villa before becoming England Manager. He resigned after England failed to qualify for the 1994 World Cup and went on to manage Wolverhampton Wanderers, Watford and Aston Villa.
1994 – 1996
Terry Venables
Played for Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Queens Park Rangers, Crystal Palace and England. He managed Crystal Palace, Queens Park Rangers, Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur before becomming England Manager. He took England to the semi-finals of Euro 1996 before retiring.
1996 – 1999
Glenn Hoddle
Played for Tottenham Hotspur, AS Monaco, Swindon Town, Chelsea and England. Manged Swindon Town and Chelsea before becomming England Manager. England only reached the second round of the 1998 World Cup and were eliminated in the group stage of Euro 2000. He was dismissed from the post following comments made which caused offence to disabled groups. He wnet on to manage Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
1999
Howard Wilkinson
Was appointed caretaker manger following the dismissal of Glenn Hoddle. He had played for Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Brighton and Hove Albion and Boston United before managing Boston United, Mossley, Notts County, Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United.
1999 – 2000
Kevin Keegan
Played for Scunthorpe United, Liverpool, Hamburger SV, Southampton, Newcastle United, Blacktown City and England. He managed Newcastle United and Fulham before becomming England Manager. He resigned as England Manager after the team failed to reach the quarter finals in Euro 2000
2000
Howard Wilkinson
Was appointed caretaker manager for the second time. He then went on to manage Sunderland and Shanghai Shenhua.
2000
Peter Taylor
Was appointed caretaker manager for one match. He had played for Southend United, Crystal Palace, Tottenham Hotspur, Leyton Orient, Exeter City, Maidstone United, Chelmsford City, Dartford and England. He had managed Dartford, Southend United, Dover Athletic, England Under 21s, Gillingham and Leicester City before becomming England Caretaker manager. He went on to manage Brighton and Hove Albion, Hull City, England Under 21s, Crystal Palace, Stevenage Borough, Wycombe Wanderers, Bradford City, Bahrain, Gillingham,Kerala Blasters and New Zealand.
2001 – 2006
Sven-Goran Eriksson
Played for Torsby IF, SK Sifhalla, KB Karlskoga FF, Vastra Frolunda IF. Managed Degerfors IF, IFK Goteborg, Benfica, Roma, Florentina, Sampdoria and Lazio before becomming England Manager. He was the first foreign manager of the English team. England progressed to the second round of the 2002 World Cup and the second round of Euro 2004. In the 2006 World Cup England reached the quarter finals and Eriksson resigned shortly afterwards. He went on to manage Manchester City, Mexico, Ivory Coast, Leicester City, Guangzhou R&F and Shanghai SIPG
2006 – 2007
Steve McClaren
Played for Hull City, Derby County, Bristol City and Oxford United. Managed Middlesborough before becomming England Manager. He was sacked after England failed to qualify for the 2008 Euros. He went on to manage FC Twente, VfL Wolfsburg, Nottingham Forest, Derby County and Newcastle United.
2008 – 2012
Fabio Capello
Played for SPAL, Roma, Juventus, Milan and Italy. Managed Milan, Real Madrid, Roma and Juventus before becomming England Manager. He took England to the second round of the 2010 World Cup and quater finals of Euro 2012. He resigned in 2012 and went on to manage Russia before being sacked in 2015.
2012
Stuart Pearce
Was appointed caretaker manager for one match following the resignation of Fabio Capello. Pearce played for Coventry City, Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United, Westham United, Manchester City and England. He managed Manchester City and England under 21s before becomming caretaker manager. He went on to manage Nottingham Forest.
2012 – 2016
Roy Hodgson
Played for Crystal Palace, Tonbridge Angels, Gravesend and Northfleet, Maidstone United, Ashford Town, Berea Park and Carshalton Athletic. Managed Halmstads BK, Bristol City, IK Oddevold, Orebro SK, Malmo FF, Neuchatel Xamax, Switzerland, Internazionale, Blackburn Rovers, Grasshoppers, Copenhagen, Udinese, United Arab Emirates, Viking, Finland, Fulham, Liverpool and West Bromwich Albion before becomming England Manager. He took England to the quarter finals of Euro 2012. In the 2014 World Cup England were eliminated at the group stage and in the 2016 Euros were eliminated in the second round. Hodgson’s contract was not renewed.
2016
Sam Allardyce
Played for Bolton Wanderers, Sunderland, Millwall, Tampa Bay, Coventry City, Huddersfield Town, Bolton Wanderers, Preston North End, West Bromwich Albion, Limerick. Managed Blackpool, Nottingham County, Bolton Wanderers, Newcastle United, Blackburn Rovers, West Ham United and Sunderland before being appointed England Manager. However after being in post for just 2 months he was recorded by an undercover reporter offering to help get round FA rules. He resigned amid the controversy.
2016
Gareth Southgate
Appointed caretaker manager on 27th September following Sam Allerdyce’s resignation. Played for Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, Middlesborough and England. Managed Middlesborough and England under 21s. He was appointed England manager on 30th November
