This timeline details the 27 Amendments to the United States Constitution
Following the American War of Independence, George Washington stressed the importance of a Constitution to set out the terms of government. The document, which consists of seven articles, was ratified in 1788 and came into effect on 4th March 1789. It established the mechanics of the new government. To date there have been twenty-seven amendments to the Constitution. The first ten amendments, which became law in 1791, are also known as the Bill of Rights.
